Do you have bad habits you’ve struggled to break without success? You’re not alone. Often, people try to abandon a bad habit once and for all but aren’t successful at doing so.

As a physician, I see people who struggle to change their habits. Even when you tell them that not doing so could shorten their lifespan, many have a hard time breaking free of old, comfortable habits.

Does that mean it’s impossible? Definitely not! Just as you form bad habits, you can “unform” them too. Whether you want to quit smoking, stop biting your nails, or stop sleeping too long in the morning, there are ways to make it easier.

Let’s look at some steps you can take to make breaking bad habits easier.

Get Your Mindset Right

If you’re not motivated to kick a habit, you won’t put forth enough effort. Have you noticed that it’s easier talk about and wish for something than it is to do it?

Having the desire to change something is different than taking action to do so.
