The Dark Truth about Dopamine and Why It’s Sabotaging Your Success
Ever wondered why you can’t resist checking your phone every few minutes? Blame it on dopamine!
I heard a corny joke about dopamine the other day:
Why did the dopamine molecule have to enroll in therapy?
Answer: It had too many highs and lows!
Okay, it’s probably not a joke you’d want to tell at a party, unless you want people to look at you like you’re strange. So, on a serious note, let’s look at what dopamine is. You’ll discover how it can give you a lift, while still being your worst enemy.
Dopamine: The Brain’s Rollercoaster Ride
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter or brain chemical. It’s one of those brain chemicals responsible for the highs and lows we experience in life. When your brain releases it, you feel on top of the world, at least temporarily.
But inevitably you skyrocket back down to earth and descend into a lower mood state. It’s like the thrill has worn off and you desperately crave another burst of pleasure.
This drives you to repeat whatever behavior triggered that dopamine release. It could be watching a funny video on social media or heading to the kitchen for cupcake or, on a healthier note, a cup of tea.
