Welcome to the fascinating world of Vitamin E. It’s not just another letter in the vitamin alphabet — it’s your body’s master protector, working behind the scenes to keep you healthy. Think of vitamin E as a family of eight related compounds — four tocopherols and four tocotrienols (try saying that three times fast!)

Vitamin E Is More Than a Single Vitamin

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage. Among the eight different forms of vitamin E (four tocopherols and four tocotrienols), alpha tocopherol is the most active form in humans.

This is partly because the liver preferentially re-secretes only alpha tocopherol into the bloodstream, while other forms are metabolized and excreted.

So, there’s a clear favorite in this family: alpha tocopherol. This is the form of vitamin E that has the most research behind it. It’s also the form in most supplements and fortified foods.

However, there’s some evidence that alpha-tocotrienols may have unique benefits, like being more neuroprotective and better at lowering LDL-cholesterol. It’s an area that needs more research.
